4 years ago I shot my first newborn for someone who I barely knew. I had done others, but always for friends or family; known acquaintances. Now Jackson’s kindergarten teacher wasn’t a stranger, but it took a lot of discomfort for me to step out of my shy comfort zone and tell her that I was a newborn photographer. And even more discomfort to tell her that she should let me shoot her newborn. There was a lot going on back then in my personal life and to say that I wasn’t self confident is an understatement. So when she booked me, it was an amazing shock and so thrilling. Maybe I will share those photos with you in another blog post 🙂
3 years ago my kiddos and I moved to Springfield, Ohio. It’s my hometown and I didn’t realize it at the time, but I know now that this is where my family is meant to be. So Jackson started his new school and had Mrs. Roberts for first grade. We loved her and we loved the school and one of the coolest things was that my cousin was also a teacher there so there was immediately a level of comfort, familiarity, and safety. We became more invested in this school and came to know the teachers better than we had at his old school.
This year is our third year at Northridge. My kiddos and I are very familiar with everyone. The kids are the same ages as some of the teachers’ kids, and they’ve been active in sports, and then with us being close to school it has helped me be more involved….especially when 3 of the 4 go to school. So this year I found it a little easier to step into that discomfort area and offer to photograph some of the teachers’ children. I was blessed by them saying yes. And for those that I haven’t gotten to, but we’ve discussed it, thank you too! I can’t wait!
I don’t think that disbelief or overwhelming gratitude for being chosen to photograph someone’s loved one ever goes away. I hope it doesn’t. It is such an honor and I do not want to take it for granted.
So, where’s Grayson, you are probably asking!!! He’s here!
This year Lucas was blessed with Mrs. Roberts as his first grade teacher and when I found out she was expecting a baby, I (completely honest mom moment here) thought, “Oh, no! How is that going to effect Lucas this year?” Ha! I know! It was a very selfish thought. And then I thought, “Ooooooohh, maybe I can take his photos or shoot his birth….” Ok, maybe both sound a little selfish, but if you know me, you know that I truly believe in birth photography and I love newborn photography.
Grayson’s mom took me up on the newborn photos and it was amazing to be included in such a precious time. I loved getting to spend time with Gray and his momma and dad.
Gray did such a great job! I know he made us work for it, but I think it was completely worth it!
I love those little milk spots on a baby’s nose!
Love his toes!!!
Thank you, Jessica and Brandon, for trusting me with your handsome lil’ guy! You two are already wonderful parents! The way you two work together is inspiring. <3
And Jessica, it was so great to get to spend time with you and get to know you and your family better! My kiddos and I are blessed to know you! Thank you!
